Canadian Film on Our Grounds: Murdoch Mysteries
Murdoch Mysteries has become an enigma in the film industry for its longstanding popularity and success. When most series typically define success as surviving as a production for 3 years, Murdoch Mysteries is celebrating its 18th year with its audience represented in over 150 countries.
Cruickston Park has been hosting Murdoch as a location annually. Of course Cruickston’s timelessness and historical infrastructure is an ideal setting for Murdoch’s period show. Over time they have used a lot of different back drops: interior and exteriors of the buildings, the garden, cottages, garages, barns, laneways

Whatever the storyline Murdoch punctuates their visits typically with heart: On one particularly hot summer day filming, work was paused so everyone could enjoy a popsicle. On another occasion Yannick took an interest in our little dog Max which resulted in Max licking the make-up off his face.
Max became an icon for the show - friends with everyone, especially with those who frequented the kraft truck. Max could always be found sitting at the bottom of the stairs looking hopefully towards the door. Everyone knew not to feed Max chocolate chip cookies, tho Max got his share of other treats. Eventually the show, crew and kraft truck leave yet Max continues to show up and sits in his same spot where the kraft truck had been. Waiting for its return.
Cruickston was recognized in Hollywood as a ‘go to’ for film-making. By experience we’ve learned there is a certain personality that accompanies every show. They are all different. Murdoch is distinguished as an efficient, thoughtful, well-organized troupe. They are typically Canadian in their tendency to be understated while over delivering. They prefer not to spend much energy revelling in their past success, but simply keep their gaze forward on the next show.
